Foundation 101 | Combo/Oily Skin

Foundations 101

Hey guys! Welcome back! Today I thought I would do another ‘101’ post, but this time on foundations. I have tried about a million foundations, and I will continue to try different brands to see which ones I like best. These are some of my favourites; High end and drug store! If you would like to find out why, keep reading!

So, for those of you who are unaware or are new to my blog, I should probably tell you about my skin. I guess I technically have Combination Skin; Which means that I have an oily T-zone and some dry patches. With that being said, I would say I am more on the oily side of the spectrum. My face produces oil like nobody’s business. I also have HUGE pores, am very acne prone and have a lot of scarring and pigmentation (Sounds like a frigin’ dream, eh?!) Anyways, over the years, I have learned numerous tips and tricks that help cover my problem areas and make my skin look flawless. The following foundations are some of my favourites; They cover my scarring, don’t break me out, and I just absolutely love them! If you are not an oily skin gal, like myself, this post may not be for you. I don’t try other types of foundations (ie. dewy finishes, or anything that will make my face look greasier than it already is!) I am a MATTE gal through and through – So that’s what all these foundations are for. If you are like me, and are in the market for a new mattifying foundation, I highly suggest giving one of these a try! Let’s get into the foundations, shall we?!

We will start with the more affordable drug store options.

Infallible Pro-Matte™ Foundation Classic Ivory L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Foundation – I heard about this foundation from a YouTuber that I follow, Casey Holmes (If you don’t know her, or haven’t been on her channel, check her out! She’s amazing!) I fell in love with her because she has skin that is very similar to mine; Oily, sensitive, acne prone. Whenever she talks about foundations that she loves, I tend to check them out because I feel that if they don’t bother her skin, they won’t bother mine. She raved about this foundation when it came out, and seeing that it is from the drug store, I purchased it right away. There is a technology in this foundation that is supposed to absorb excess oil leaving skin matte without looking cakey. I really liked this foundation when I bought it; I used it almost everyday. It didn’t break me out and it left my skin looking somewhat matte (I have to blot or powder no matter what foundation I use after a few hours). If you are looking for a really great drug store foundation, I would test this one out.

Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation - Maybelline New YorkMaybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation – Again, I heard about this product on YouTube as well (I can’t help it; I’m addicted to watching makeup tutorials!) Anyways, Stephanie Lange (Another YouTuber with skin similar to mine) LOVED this foundation! I think she may have even called it her new holy grail! So of course I had to try it. It says everything in the name; Matte and Poreless. I need both of those things! I had a very hard time finding the right shade for my skin tone in this foundation (And I have no idea why! I am usually really good at colour matching without even swatching!) I bought this in 2 different shades and both were WAY too orange for my skin. I did wear it once, but I just couldn’t let myself wear it again and look like a pumpkin. ANYWAYS! This applied amazingly. It really did help my pores look less visible, the formula covered most of my redness and it is super buildable (Which I love because one layer is definitely not enough for me!) I bought the powder to go along with this as well, and together they are an amazing combo for oily skin!

ALMAY Liquid FoundationAlmay Clear Complexion Makeup – This foundation was my holy grail in high school! It was the only one I wore! This foundation is made for acne prone skin; It is supposed to cover blemishes, clear up acne, calm the skin and control oil and future breakouts. It also contains salicylic acid for controlling breakouts. This is a lighter coverage foundation, which some people like. I used to wear it every day to school, I would just apply a layer with my fingers and it was okay for me (Then .. When I knew nothing about makeup. Now I would add a couple more layers). But I swore by this foundation. Since high school, seeing as I don’t really break out anymore (Unless something irritates my skin) I have gotten away from using this, but if my skin starts to act up, I always go back to it. If you have acne, or just a couple break outs here and there, I would highly suggest picking this up. It really did help my skin without drying it out. It is a lighter coverage which won’t feel cakey on the skin and will allow your skin to breathe. It’s an amazing foundation!

Okay – Now onto high end! Since I have become obsessed with makeup, I have really fallen in love with high end foundations. I know that some of the drug store products are great, but I always just feel that the higher end products are better quality. Is that snobby?! Oh well.. Here are my favourite high end foundations!

Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Foundation – This was the very first high end foundation that I bought. I had read a lot about this foundation being great for people with oily skin, so I decided to give it a whirl. I love this foundation. I feel that it was really nice on my skin, didn’t cake up, didn’t break me out, and was super buildable. I used this foundation until it was absolutely gone; I also used it on friends when I did their makeup and it looked flawless. This is said to be a full coverage foundation but I find it more of a medium coverage. When I use this foundation, if I only use one layer, there is still some redness peaking through. But as I said, you can build it up so with a second layer, it is definitely more of a full coverage. This foundation didn’t break me out at all, didn’t make my dry patches worse, and I really loved it. Great first high end foundation purchase… Maybe that’s why I’m completely obsessed now!

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation – Okay, if you haven’t heard about this foundation, you must be living under a rock. Everyone and their brother has talked about this foundation with mixed reviews. Personally, I love this! This is a FULL coverage foundation, which I find can get cakey if you aren’t careful. I bought this in a shade that is a BIT too light for me (But the next shade darker was too orangey on my skin) so I feel that in photos it makes me look a tad washed out. But that’s honestly okay, because in real life (You know … Not in pictures) I feel like my skin looks beautiful! (I just throw on a bit more bronzer to warm up the skin). This covers all of my redness and problem areas, without irritating my skin at all. I was a bit worried when I bought this that it would be too heavy on my skin, not allowing it to breathe and that I would break out like crazy but I haven’t – So far so good! If you like really thick, full coverage foundations – This one is definitely for you!

And now for my newest obsession – The Diorskin Forever Perfect Makeup – Again, I heard about this foundation about a month ago from Casey Holmes in one of her videos. The description of the product made me want to purchase it immediately:

“Get perfect, 16-hour foundation coverage and broad spectrum SPF 35 protection from day to evening. This foundation leaves a luminous matte finish, flawless correction, and exceptional comfort. It’s enriched with Poreless Effect skin care essence, leaving the skin’s texture looking more refined with each wear.”

Um – YES PLEASE! I’m not going to lie to you – This foundation is frigin expensive! As soon as I bought it, I regretted spending that kind of money on a foundation. But once I received it in the mail, and started to use it, all of that disappeared. This foundation is amazing! This makes my skin look absolutely flawless! It keeps my skin matte, and covers all my scarring and redness. I can’t say enough good things about this foundation. If you are willing to splurge, and spend a months rent on a foundation (Not really, but you know what I mean) DEFINITELY check this one out! I will keep you guys posted on if over time my skin looks more refined like it is supposed to!

Okay – So I was going to limit myself to three drug store and 3 high end (Because I like the number 3) but I have one more higher end foundation that I just need to rave about. I use this foundation every day for work, so I couldn’t leave it out!

Touch Mineral Pressed Powder FoundationThe Younique Mineral Touch Powder Foundation – Good God YES! For a powder foundation, this product blew my mind the first time I used it. If you have read my K’s Baes for December and January, you know how obsessed with this product I am. It is so full coverage, and it’s a powder so it’s not heavy on your skin! I am completely in love with it. Every morning, I throw this on my face for work. It’s quick, easy and allows me to sleep those few extra minutes (Because you can never get enough sleep, right?!) Anyways, I know that this isn’t a Sephora brand or anything, but it is pretty pricey so I figured it would be a high end product. I know a lot of people don’t like Younique because of the sales tactics, but I have a friend who sells it, so she isn’t pushy at all. If you have a Younique rep in your area, and you have been debating about trying this, I really think you should. It’s amazing!

Alright my oily skin loves, that’s it for my favourite foundations! If you try any of these, or have any other options that you find are great for oily/sensitive skin, please let me know! I am always looking for the next best foundation! Honestly, I can’t get enough of them!

Thanks so much for reading! Chat soon guys! Xoxox
